Chamsa Shekel Necklace in Gold with Diamonds

This Chamsa pendant is constructed from an Israeli 10 Agorot coin and set with 1.8mm diamonds (total carat weight is apx. 3/4ct). This coin actually holds in it’s design a tiny piece of historical and political controversy. In 1988, Yasser Arafat (chairman of the PLO) claimed the design of the coin, which includes a map of “Greater Israel” depicting a landmass from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and from the Red Sea to the Euphrates promoted Zionist expansionism. But the Bank of Israel rebutted Arafat by claiming that the 10 Agorot coin was designed for it’s historical value and was patterned after a coin issued in 37-40 BCE during the Roman siege of Jerusalem. But the historical value of this piece goes further than that of its coin. The shape of this pendant is known as a Chamsa which is a symbol meant to protect against the “evil eye”; It is a kind of “protecting hand” or “hand of god”. While it is a large part of both Jewish and Islamic culture (among others) archaeological evidence suggests it predates both religions. Recently, many activists for peace in the Middle East have chosen the Chamsa as a symbol of peace in showing the similarities in the traditions. This pendant has been set with diamonds which are believed to be the symbol of innocence, constancy, and love: three characteristics which seem to be in line with the history of the Chamsa.
The pendant itself is apx. 1" tall and 3/4" wide.
