Chamsa Shekel Necklace in Silver with Sapphires

This Chamsa pendant is constructed from an Israeli ½ Lira coin (which is no longer in circulation) and set with 1.8mm sapphires. It’s been called the Israeli Lira or the Israel Pound and was the currency of Israel from shortly after it’s creation of the state (in 1948) until 1980.  At some point in the 1960’s the Israeli government renamed the Lira the Shekel so as to provide it with a Hebrew name.  We picked this coin for the beauty of it’s design and crafted it into a Chamsa, which is a symbol meant to protect against the “evil eye”; It is a kind of “protecting hand” or “hand of god”. While it is a large part of both Jewish and Islamic culture (among others) archaeological evidence suggests it predates both religions.  Recently, many activists for peace in the Middle East have chosen the chamsa as a symbol of peace in showing the similarities in the traditions.  And in that vein of peace, we’ve set this pendant with sapphires which many believe bring their wearer peace among other qualities.

The pendant itself is apx. 1" tall and 1" wide.

A little style secret: our pendants double as fabulous charms!  You can mix and match pendants on different necklaces and bracelets easily by choosing the charm option for your pendant.  For a nominally higher price, you can have this style luxury for your own Kessef piece.

And for an eco-option you can chose to make your necklace recycled with Kessef Yaroke.  To read more about this earth-friendly option please see our About the Jewelry section.
